When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 9 2010

Paul Edwards's skillful adaptation of Jack Finney's classic 1955 sci-fi novel revels in the atmosphere of the Eisenhower era, when postwar complacency collided with cold war anxiety. Set in a California town where people are being replaced by look-alikes from another world, Finney's space-age twist on folk tales about soul-stealing demons offers an allegory for creeping communism--or conservatism, depending on your political perspective. Edwards's well-acted story-theater staging preserves Finney's crisp, ironic narration, enhancing the familiar tale with atmospheric lighting and projected images of A-bomb explosions, outer space, and magazine ads from the 1950s. Most impressive is the way the mood shifts fluidly from ironic humor to chilling suspense. --Albert Williams
