The Borrowed Bride

This 2005 feature, the last by Turkish filmmaker Atif Yilmaz, sparked a national debate about the ethics of “borrowed brides”—women who sexually initiate male virgins prior to their marriages. Set in the 1920s, it concerns one such arrangement, involving an older woman who agrees to initiate a mayor's son because her own fiance needs the money. In Turkish with subtitles. 119 min.
