The Bothersome Man

In this pitch-black Norwegian comedy (2006) a man commits suicide and unaccountably finds himself in a sterile urban purgatory. Everyone is so blandly happy he decides to kill himself again, only to be foiled with each increasingly gruesome attempt. This is definitely well-trod territory—the winks to Albert Brooks, Wim Wenders, Jacques Tati, and others border on the gratuitous—but director Jens Lien's distinctive visual flair and screenwriter Per Schreiner's mordant wit help create a fresh and absorbing work. In Norwegian with subtitles. 95 min.
