The Boys From Syracuse

George Abbott's rewrite of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, with songs by Rodgers and Hart. Perhaps the material has gone through too many transformations: this 1940 Universal film version looks pretty tired, despite a spirited supporting cast that includes Martha Raye, Joe Penner, and Alan Mowbray. The leads, alas, are Rosemary Lane and Allan Jones, and they sink it. Edward Sutherland directed—his sloppiness had a certain charm, but it doesn't help here.
