The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy

An attractive, affable cast buoys this feature about a tight-knit circle of gay friends enjoying the hedonistic bonhomie of west Hollywood. Dennis (Timothy Olyphant), a photographer who longs to settle down, shares a place with Cole (Dean Cain), a movie star and come-on artist; they and their pals are glibly witty, yet whenever one of them succumbs to an emotional crisis the others rally around him. Writer-director Greg Berlanti is a facile supplier of catchy dialogue and observes his characters' social behavior with the fondness and acuity of an insider, yet his episodic structure elicits laughter and sympathy without quite earning them, and his minor characters are sketchy, including John Mahoney as the avuncular owner of an upscale restaurant and Nia Long and Mary McCormack as a lesbian couple desperate to become parents. 94 min.
