The Cabinet Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 25 2010

Redmoon's usual color-saturated palette has been replaced by somber sepias and grays for this stunning production, a remount of the company's 2005 hit based on the classic German expressionist film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Narrated by Colm O'Reilly, who's cornered the market on flat, mesmerizing intonations, Mickle Maher's live-actor-and-puppet version builds dread with diamond-edged precision. Director Vanessa Stalling finds moments of morbid Edward Goreyesque wit in the tale of a somnambulist and his evil master, without losing the essential horror. "A dream of genuine sound might wake its dreamer," says O'Reilly—and, sure enough, a bloodcurdling scream late in the show has the effect of a punch to the solar plexus. This is one nightmare that shouldn't be missed. —Kerry Reid
