The Cairn Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays. Continues through Feb. 14 2013

Playwright Jennifer Biddle has given herself an interesting subject: the weird symbiosis between a gravely ill man and his professional caretaker. In Biddle's construction, Richard is confined to his bed, suffering from "stage four" something (it doesn't get any more specific than that), and Kari is a kind of terminal-patient groupie who's found the perfect job in in-home hospice care. I can imagine Biddle and her compatriots at Oppidian Theatrical using the situation to give us a scary, ugly-erotic exploration of weakness and power a la Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Secretary, or the 1996 JG Ballard-inspired Crash—i.e., pretty much anything James Spader starred in before Boston Legal. But I'd settle for a play that isn't so heavily weighed down with useless symbolism and precious, non sequiturial dialogue. Adam Dodds's staging is no help at all. Presented as part of Rhinofest. —Tony Adler
