The Caretaker Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 28 2009

Beneath an anodyne premise--two brothers consider hiring a disheveled old man to look after their ramshackle house--the stark, unsettling dialogue of Harold Pinter's 1960 drama crackles with malice, tension, and barely suppressed violence. The play's impact is blunted, however, in Curious Theatre Branch's diffuse production directed by the cast and Jayita Bhattacharya. Glacially paced and sluggishly acted by an ensemble speaking in American accents (which jars Pinter's British slang), the show doesn't really get cracking until just before the second intermission, which is too late. Even so, Jeff Bivens is sharp and unpredictable as the more hotheaded of the brothers. --Zac Thompson
