The Cat in the Hat Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Sept. 1 2013

In Emerald City's terrifically fun production of the Dr. Seuss story, adapted for the stage by the British director Katie Mitchell, the eponymous Cat (Danny Taylor) is rendered a thrilling, slightly reckless vision of the unfettered id—who, of course, has the most fun. Fish (Erik Strebig), the more reserved character, gains prominence; the play emphasizes themes of responsibility, despite the ambiguity of the source text. But don't get me wrong: even relegated to superego duties, this Fish has his fun. Director Ernie Nolan foregrounds his dreamlife in a sea-themed medley, and Streiberg is awesome in a performance that demands puppetry, dance, acrobatics—and not a little bit of sweat. This was one of those rare theatrical events as satisfying for a grown-up as it was for her squealing six-year-old companion. —Suzanne Scanlon
