The Chameleon

Michigan businessman Phil Wurtzel spent four years writing the script for this crime drama, then bankrolled the production himself so that he could direct—an admirable but unwise decision. Filmed on a shoestring in Battle Creek, it stars veteran character actors Seymour Cassel, as a retired hit man who's marked for death by the son of a couple he once killed, and Tom Dahlgren as the local sheriff, who shares an uncomfortable secret with the old guy. The story is ably constructed, but the direction is clunky and the dialogue alternately humdrum and writerly; more than anything it reminded me of those 70s TV detective series by Quinn Martin. 90 min.
