The Changeling Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 12 2009

Jacobean tragedy in a storefront can be a tough proposition, and Caffeine Theatre's stab at Thomas Middleton and William Rowley's exemplar of the form doesn't entirely overcome the problems. Director Rachel Walshe's cast attempts to scale the more excessive moments down for the small playing area--but in a work that's mostly excess, we're left with an uneven tone. As the murderously fickle fiancee whose machinations lead to several bloody deaths, Amanda Powell occasionally conveys a beguiling blend of coltish vigor and scheming venom. But the comic subplot involving an insane asylum falls flat. A few of the design elements, including Thomas Dixon's spare, haunting soundscape, stand out. Runs in repertory with Melanie Marnich's Tallgrass Gothic. See both plays for $5 extra. --Kerry Reid
