The Chicago Air and Water Show--A History of Wings above the Waves

When: Sat., July 31, 2 p.m. 2010

Gerry and Janet Souter’s latest book gives an insider’s look at the world of careening boats and roaring aircraft. It delves into the history of the 1911 International Aviation Meet held over Grant Park and Monroe Harbor; a salute by the Graf Zeppelin in 1933, the World War II aircraft carrier landings by pilots that included future President George H. W. Bush and the royal yacht visit from young Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Little known anecdotes dating back to 1959 show how an air and water presentation costing $88 grew into today’s million dollar spectacle.
