Adept at big action pictures (The World Is Not Enough) and famous for his intimate documentaries about children becoming adults (Seven Up et al), veteran British director Michael Apted was an inspired choice for this third installment of the franchise based on C.S. Lewis's classic fantasy novels. The two youngest Pevensie children (Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley) and their peevish cousin (Will Poulter, outstanding) are pulled into the mystical realm of Narnia to recover seven enchanted swords. The beguiling creature design—from minotaur to dragon, sea serpent to one-footed dwarf—and 3D effects heighten the illusion of a storybook coming alive, while the rousing sea adventure drives home Lewis's Christian ethos better than either of the previous entries. With Ben Barnes and Tilda Swinton.
