The City

Immigrant nonactors play most of the characters in this 1998 film, a series of linked vignettes illustrating the dilemmas and hardships of several Latin-American immigrants in New York City. The bitterly beautiful black-and-white industrial and residential landscapes reflect the sense of anonymity felt by the characters, who, in scenes that function as segues, pose at a photo studio for pictures that emphasize their individuality as well as their shared experiences. Written and directed by David Riker; with Jose Rabelo. 88 min.
