The Clean House The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Sept. 1 2013

It's tempting, and maddening, to try and pin down what Sarah Ruhl's 2004 domestic dramedy is really about. Centering on three delightfully resolute characters—a doctor, her sister, and her housekeeper—the story explores their relationships and ambitions after the doctor's husband cheats on her. But, at least in this Crabapple Productions staging, the exploration is fumbling, and never quite initiates the audience into its mysteries. The stop-and-go plot speeds through key events but seems to take ages to get where it's going. And director Emmi Hilger's cast is a chorus of skilled soloists: though they deliver powerful individual performances, they never seem to connect well enough to rise above Ruhl's flip narrative tricks and diversions. —Keith Griffith
