In Helen Edmundson's play, the devotion of an English husband and an Irish wife living in Ireland is put to the test when Oliver Cromwell wages war on Irish rebels in the mid-17th century. This couple isn't the first, nor will it be the last, to believe that love can transcend a community's ethnic tensions. Under Brendan Donaldson's direction and with dialect coaching by Matt Harding, the cast gives the story's dry historical arguments a warm, conversational tone, and an intimate storefront space intensifies the emotions that might otherwise have been diluted by Edmundson's episodic narrative. Through 4/30: Thu-Sat 8 PM, Sun 3 PM, Gift Theatre Company, 4802 N. Milwaukee, 773-283-7071, $15-$25.
