The Climax

Universal followed its successful 1943 remake of The Phantom of the Opera with more Technicolor opera horror (1944), this time involving Susanna Foster as a young singer and Boris Karloff as the physician who pushes her talent under hypnotic control. Director George Waggner dawdles obscenely over the warbling romance between Foster and Turhan Bey (an unlikely romantic lead, but this was wartime), but Karloff, given something of a character to play for once, is really quite affecting. With Gale Songergaard and Thomas Gomez.
