Maybe he didn't want to get pigeonholed as that Titus Andronicus guy. Or maybe he was blowing off steam after a long bout of chronicling the mayhem between the Yorks and the Lancasters. Or maybe James Burbage simply told him to lighten up. Whatever got Shakespeare going, the result was this elaborate goof about two sets of very confused twins. The twentysomething Bard goes a little crazy with the wordplay and never lets good sense get in the way of a gag. But director David Bell and company roll with it—often literally, given all the somersaults and slapstick in their outdoor traveling show. Though Bell has added a completely unnecessary framing device, it falls away soon enough, leaving us with a Chicago Shakespeare Theater production that can keep us engaged and laughing even with a basketball game going on nearby. —Tony Adler
