Director James Wan follows up Insidious (2011) with another relatively bloodless haunted house movie. Like its predecessor, it's generic and lazy as storytelling, but this time there's almost enough playful camerawork to distract from the feeble conception. The early-1970s setting seems to have been an excuse for the filmmakers to hunt around thrift stores; there's no period detail, only kitsch, yet Wan lays it on so thick that he sabotages the joke. (At the same time, the pervasiveness jokiness keeps the movie from ever being scary.) Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor play the parents of the haunted family; Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are the paranormal experts who come to their aid; the considerable talents of all are squandered.
