The Crucible Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 25 2010

Arthur Miller's 1953 play about the Salem witch-hunting hysteria was inspired by his outrage at communist-hunting by the House Un-American Activities Committee and anger at director Elia Kazan for informing on left-wing associates. Today, the play resonates as a portrait of a community manipulated by fearmongers and riven by paranoia. It's also cracking good drama--the compelling story of a man whose fling with an unstable teenage girl sets in motion a string of events that force him to make life-and-death choices. Chris Maher's Infamous Commonwealth Theatre staging doesn't tap the play's full power, but it's clear and solid. --Albert Williams
