The Curiosity of Chance

Anyone nostalgic for John Hughes's high school comedies might enjoy this romp set in the 1980s at an international high school somewhere in Europe. When an openly gay teen (Tad Hilgenbrink) transfers to the school, his flamboyance is a red flag to the reigning jocks, but he's more concerned with the hunky musician next door (Brett Chukerman). The hero aspires to become a drag cabaret singer, and the musical numbers help push this 2006 release over its creaky moments. It's colorful, energetic, upbeat, retro, and squeaky-clean, focusing on the attractive leads and their sweet romance. Russell P. Marleau directed. 98 min.
