The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys

Two Catholic schoolboys in 1970s Georgia (Kieran Culkin and Emile Hirsch) sublimate their most devilish thoughts in a comic strip that features them as heroes and their stern, one-legged teacher (Jodie Foster) as their archnemesis. Adapted from a novel by Chris Fuhrman, this 2002 coming-of-age drama is pretty familiar stuff—a series of pranks lands the boys deeper in trouble, while Hirsch's crush on a classmate strains his friendship with Culkin—yet the comic strip, rendered in macabre animation by Todd McFarlane (Spawn), captures the pent-up anger and frustration of adolescence. Peter Care directed a script by Jeff Stockwell and Michael Petroni. With Jena Malone and Vincent D'Onofrio. 105 min.
