The Darkest Pit Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Oct. 9 2009

Slam poet and fledgling playwright Kristiana Colon makes a hash of a promising scenario centered on a classroom hostage situation with an unusual shooter. The college-girl, trash-talking dialogue fails to knit together disparate monologues: a poetic utterance by a modern-day Saint Sophia, didactic speeches from a professor, a silly coed's nonsensical exposition. Credibility is scarce, while female stereotypes, most of them negative, proliferate--including sluts and feminists of various stripes, a moonstruck girl, and a grounded, no-nonsense African-American. Under Stefan Brun's direction, the pace lags; too often the inexperienced performers just sit, stare tragically, sniffle, or wail. But Elise Mayfield as the self-sacrificing Sophia and Zarinah Ali as the character on a vendetta give their roles some depth. --Laura Molzahn
