The Devil and Daniel Webster

On TV it's usually called All That Money Can Buy, with a big chunk of footage cut, but the 112-minute original should be worth a look. William Dieterle directed this adaptation of the Stephen Vincent Benet story in 1941, just as he was loosening up from his gray Warners “prestige pictures” (Juarez, etc) and entering his period of high delirium (Love Letters, I'll Be Seeing You, Portrait of Jennie). Walter Huston is Benet's “Mr. Scratch,” Edward Arnold is Webster; together they do battle for the soul of a struggling farmer (James Craig). With Simone Simon, Jane Darwell, John Qualen, and Gene Lockhart.
