The Disorientation of Butterflies Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 19 2012

If I were suicidally depressed, the last thing I'd want to do is sing about it. But then I'm not Jessie, the lead character of this musical, whose depression increasingly worries her husband and family—though her mother shudders at the thought of sending her to "a shrink." Kelly Levander directs a vocally competent cast in this Uncovered Theatre Company show, and Kathleen O'Sullivan accompanies on the piano with panache. But the book by Alaska Reece Vance is filled with abrupt transitions, flimsy relationships, and other inscrutabilities. A surreal character named Mara (presumably for the Hindu goddess of death) strikes up cryptic conversations that are more baffling than intriguing. —Keith Griffith
