These three episodes from a premium cable series emphasizing gay African-American men put the shallow manipulativeness of much commercial TV to shame. Here one feels actual human beings are dealing with real problems, and directors Deondray Gossett and Quincy Le Near choose taut compositions that render the actors' bodies—and their bodily encounters—almost hyperreal. In the episode “Robert” two men find genuine love after a struggle—one of them hasn't come out to his daughter. “Boo” incisively critiques the absurdity and pathos of a stereotypical macho guy compulsively attracted to men but convinced that, as a top who also does women, he's not gay. 100 min.
