The Doctor's Dilemma Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Mondays, Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through May 10 2010

This staged reading of George Bernard Shaw's 1906 play gets by on the timeless wit of the writing. Dr. Colenso Ridgeon (Matt Penn) has discovered a cure for tuberculosis, but produced enough of it for only one more trial. He must choose whether to treat his kindly, undistinguished colleague or a talented, dishonest artist with a fetching potential widow. Though the play champions national healthcare in passing, Shaw's stinging critique mainly targets the pomposity of the scientific establishment. As the self-satisfied Sir Ralph Bloomfield Bonington, Jack Hickey sloshes ridiculous medical advice all over the place. The rest of the cast are uneven, but manage to stay out of the way of Shaw's brilliance. --Keith Griffith
