The Dumb Waiter Recommended The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 1 2013

Director Charlie Marie McGrath crafts just the right tone for Harold Pinter's hilarious and nerve-wracking 1960 one-act. Gus and Ben, a pair of unremarkable hit men holed up in a cruddy apartment awaiting their next assignment, twiddle away an hour critiquing their lodgings, arguing over points of colloquial English usage, and lamenting violent stories in the newspaper. McGrath's cast—David Winkler as Ben, Shane Michael Murphy as Gus—waste time craftily, delivering the drollery and menace that gives the play its giddy edge. When the outside world begins to intrude, however, McGrath can't find a credible way to incorporate it, and the stakes don't feel as high. Still, Winkler and Murphy remain eminently watchable throughout. —Justin Hayford
