The Emperor's New Clothes Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 29 2010

Loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, this lighthearted new musical by Alan Schmuckler and David Holstein tells the story not only of a vain, fashion-conscious emperor, but also of his practical-minded daughter, Sam, and an evil lord intent on bringing down the emperor and ruling in his place. The result is pure but entertaining fluff--especially as staged by Rachel Rockwell and performed by an energetic ensemble. Holstein's book is sweet but contains more than a few quips that fall flat; Schmuckler's likable score has a much better hit-to-miss ratio. The most moving parts of the story concern Sam--played with verve by Megan Long--and her attempts to revive a kingdom brought to a halt by her foolish father, so she can finally go away to college. --Jack Helbig
