The First Night of My Life

Lovely coincidences fill this jazzy low-key soap opera about a bunch of discontented people attempting to celebrate New Year's Eve 1999 on the outskirts of Madrid. A very pregnant woman's condition lends a bit of suspense to the events, which involve a poor family illegally tapping into electric lines, a materialistic guy having his car stolen, a couple who deceive each other, a couple who resent each other, a romantic convenience-store clerk and her practical colleague, and two female law-enforcement officers who debate whether they should get paid days off during their periods. Elvira Lindo, who plays one of the officers, wrote the screenplay with director Miguel Albaladejo. Created for the French TV anthology “2000 Seen By.”
