The First Season

If you've always longed to spend an afternoon on a rural dairy farm, this verite-style documentary is the movie for you. Veteran indie producer (Dead Man Walking, High Fidelity, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Coffee and Cigarettes) and first-time director Rudd Simmons records the milking, feeding, and birthing of cows with reverent attention, suppressing any impulse to shape or comment on the material; in one of the more thrilling sequences, the husband and wife who own the farm work on their tax return at the kitchen table. The movie reminds you that upstate New York looks beautiful when the seasons change, but you probably knew that already.
