The Full Monty

This wonderful 1997 comedy—about an unlikely group of men who are determined to strip to music rather than get day jobs—is genuinely effective at inverting gender stereotypes and other assumptions, and it's not the slightest bit heavy-handed. Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting) is a divorced dad on the dole whose legal right to see his young son is at the heart of his self-exploitation scheme; as he persuades several other men to join him in a striptease the question of whether his son is being harmed by their lewdness is examined seriously without revoking any of the story's lightheartedness. Peter Cattaneo directed Simon Beaufoy's screenplay. 95 min.
