The Gay Desperado

85 minutes

Rouben Mamoulian's light-opera comedy (1936) mixes American gangsters and Mexican bandidos in the story of an opera tenor kidnapped for his singing and a spoiled heiress kidnapped for reasons that aren't too clear. Objectionable stereotypes reportedly abound, but Leo Carrillo and Ida Lupino are in it, and, well, it's Mamoulian after all. Not Love Me Tonight and rarely screened today, but it's probably worth taking a chance on.
