The Girl Who Played With Fire

Rated R 129 minutes 2009

An investigative journalist (Michael Nyqvist) and a kickboxing computer hacker (Noomi Rapace) untangle the murders of a young couple who were poised to expose a sex-trafficking ring. This 2009 crime thriller from Sweden is the second in a trilogy adapted from Stieg Larsson's novels, and it's more textured than the first, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Director Daniel Alfredson grounds the mystery in a real sense of place: his Stockholm looks and feels like a major city where corruption lurks behind attractive facades. The reporter character is better developed than in the first movie, but most of the supporting characters from the book have been shrunk to little more than walk-ons. Like the book, the movie suffers from some preposterous revelations that connect the heroine to the two main villains. In Swedish with subtitles.
