This computer-animated feature from Disney comes close to the wonder and terror of the studio's classic hand-painted animations; in its realization of such childhood fears as getting lost and a parent dying, it particularly recalls Bambi and Dumbo. The story takes place in an imagined world where dinosaurs have survived into the age of early man; a young apatosaurus is washed down a river and away from his family homestead, and on his journey back he befriends a Neanderthal boy and learns to fend for himself in the wild. The intricately designed settings convey a Miyazaki-like reverence for the natural world, and the hero's longing for his family is affecting, never saccharine. Peter Sohn directed.
