The Good Fight The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 17 2018

Chronicling the efforts of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), led by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter, Christabel, Anne Bertram's 2011 play, now at Babes With Blades, presents a series of vignettes from their struggle to gain the vote in the years before World War I. Through public demonstrations, bombings of property, propaganda, and, eventually, training in martial arts as a means of self-defense against police aggression, these brave and pioneering women sacrificed life and limb for the greater good. Unfortunately, a just cause is no recipe for compelling drama. There's not a single moment in this nearly two-hour production in which sympathies might waver or anyone could have any doubt about the fight's outcome. The piece comes off as a lecture with unnecessary emoting added. Elizabeth Lovelady directed. —Dmitry Samarov
