The Gospel

Platinum-selling songwriter Kirk Franklin makes a mighty contribution to the vitality of this faith-based musical, whose 20-odd numbers showcase the range of contemporary gospel. A hot R & B singer (Boris Kodjoe) abandons a lucrative concert tour to visit his ailing father (Clifton Powell), the bishop of an influential congregation that's fallen on hard times. The prodigal son is drawn to a talented choral soloist (Tamyra Gray), but resented by his father's protege and designated successor (Idris Elba in the movie's best performance). Writer-director Rob Hardy opts for family-friendly drama but tones down the conflicts so much that none of the story lines can rival the music. PG, 105 min.
