The Gray Girl The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 17 2011

Two relics of a bygone Chicago bookend this ghostly new 1950s-era crime drama from Factory Theater: the Chicago American, a scoop-dogging afternoon daily that shuttered in the 1970s, and the legendary Riverview Amusement Park. Nick Brennan is a hungry young American reporter who targets the park's mob connections after his wife is murdered there. When the apparition of a dead source shows up, it's clear that Brennan isn't the only one out for revenge. Matt Engle directs a technically proficient and enjoyably spooky production. But the story by Colin Milroy (who also plays Brennan) feels unpolished, and its lightning-fast scenes owe more to video-game noir than the cinematic kind. —Keith Griffith
