The Great American Trailer Park Musical Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 26 2012

This 2004 musical by David Nehls and Betsy Kelso is mired in coarse, obvious white-trash caricatures. Set in the Armadillo Acres trailer park ("north Florida's most exclusive manufactured-housing community"), the show focuses on a sexual triangle involving neighbors: a middle-aged toll collector, his agoraphobic wife, and an exotic dancer. The songs are forgettable, the jokes—about tabloid TV, miscegenation, Wal-Mart, drug abuse, etc—are painfully predictable, and one bit about a man facing death in the electric chair is gratuitously offensive. The material is redeemed somewhat, in John Glover's staging for Kokandy Productions, by powerhouse female vocalists and high-quality visual design. —Albert Williams
