The Great Waltz

104 minutes 1938

French exile Julien Duvivier directed this soporific Hollywood biography (1938) of Johann Strauss, notorious for the sequence in which Strauss (Fernand Gravet) composes The Blue Danube on a carriage ride through the woods, picking his notes from the sounds of birds chirping in the trees. With Luise Rainer and the European opera star Miliza Korjus; Lionel Atwill, Hugh Herbert, and Herman Bing provide the Viennese ambience.

35mm. Wed 1/31, 7:30 PM.
