The Green Prince

Rated PG-13 101 minutes 2014

Fans of Errol Morris might be ticked off by this sensationalistic documentary, which copies his flamboyant visual style but lacks his narrative finesse and philosophical curiosity. The movie's empty pizzazz is especially irritating because the story would have been compelling without any embellishment: Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of a Hamas leader, betrayed his father to become a mole for the Israeli secret service. Yousef's life as a double agent is at once a great espionage story and a knotty moral tale; director Nadav Schirman (The Champagne Spy) generates a fair amount of suspense simply by relating the facts in sequence, but moral complexity is beyond his grasp. In English and subtitled Hebrew.
