The Grown-Up Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through May 23 2015

Jordan Harrison's quirky little 75-minute show defies easy categorization. Part fever dream, part live-action cartoon, part contemporary version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this highly episodic one-act follows the life of an American writer from childhood obscurity to Hollywood acclaim, with special attention to all the odd characters he meets along the way. Harrison strains mightily to make this likable diversion into a deep allegory about love and life and the American dream. But really what makes this Shattered Globe production worth watching are the many fine, funny performances director Krissy Vanderwarker coaxes out of her playful six-member ensemble. Watching them create one dazzling, bizarre scene after another—each of them utterly baffling to the show's hapless protagonist (played to the hilt by Kevin Viol)—is worth the price of admission. —Jack Helbig
