The Handyman

Canadian actress Micheline Lanctot (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz) turned to directing with this 1980 film about a gentle, hapless carpenter (Jocelyn Berube) who becomes involved in a tortured affair with the love-starved mistress of the house he has been hired to redecorate. The film becomes more original as it plays out, with the excessive sweetness of the premise coming up against Lanctot's surprisingly stoic, unsentimental appreciation of life's enigmas and betrayals. A promising debut, partially fulfilled by Lanctot's subsequent Sonatine.
