The Hiding Place Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 23 2010

Corrie Ten Boom was a devout Christian, imprisoned during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands for hiding Jews in her home. In Tim Gregory's play based on her autobiography, Ten Bloom faces interrogation from Rahms, a German officer terrified that his wife and child in Bremen will be killed by Allied air raids. Rahms holds Ten Boom's actions beneath contempt, yet desperately needs some of her faith, while Ten Boom sees Rahms as the ultimate test of her ability to love and forgive even her enemies. Theirs is an electrifying ten-minute encounter. If the rest of Gregory's three-hour script had similar drama and ambiguity, rather than schematic demonstrations of Nazi sadism and Dutch virtue, this show might matter. With such a strong cast and powerful raw material, it's a colossal missed opportunity. --Justin Hayford
