The Houdini Box | North Shore Center for the Performing Arts | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

The Houdini Box Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through March 25 2012

Before he hit it big with The Invention of Hugo Cabret (filmed by Martin Scorsese as Hugo), Brian Selznick penned the children's book on which this charming new musical by Hannah Kohl and Mark Messing is based. Ten-year-old Victor is obsessed with Houdini's illusions and escapes; when a chance encounter lands a mysterious locked box in Victor's hands, he suspects it contains the secrets to Houdini's magic. Kohl's book moves fast, while puppetry and a lively xylophone-and-accordion accompaniment add whimsy. Blair Thomas's distinctive visual touch comes through in the scenic and puppet design for this Chicago Children's Theatre production, effectively capturing the flat three-dimensionality of a pop-up book. —Keith Griffith
