The Humans Recommended Member Picks New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays, Fridays. Continues through Dec. 9 2011

In her haunting, mysterious Paper Shoes, Rachel Bunting builds a shrine to innocence and its loss. She's filled the landing outside the theater with talismans, most of them painted white: dainty women's shoes, shells, toys, little prancing-horse figurines. The hour-long performance taps these and other totems (bowls, water, delicate paper) in vignettes that take us from romantic disappointment to an eerie, equine march set to "The Fury of Overshoes," Anne Sexton's dead-on lyric invocation of childhood. Collin Bunting's costumes, Glen Jennings's video, and Sam Robinson's sound buoy the dance's poetry. A few of the vignettes lose steam, but, overall, this passionately performed piece for six offers an immersion in the joys of imagination as well as despair at its fragility. —Laura Molzahn
