The Idiot

Filmed in the snows of Hokkaido, Akira Kurosawa's Japanese transposition of the Dostoyevski novel stars Masayuki Mori as the noble-hearted, simpleminded prince who falls into a conflict with a merchant's son (Toshiro Mifune) over the affections of a flirtatious woman (Setsuko Hara). Kurosawa's follow-up to his acclaimed Rashomon, this 1951 release failed to find either the commercial or critical success of its predecessor, perhaps because of Kurosawa's insistence on following the contours of the original material too closely. With Yoshiko Kuga and Takashi Shimura.
