The Impossible Adventures of Supernova Jones Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 10 2015

Like baseball fans diverted by a Jumbotron, theatergoers lose their focus on immediate reality when a TV screen gets plopped in front of them. The boob tube features heavily in this 50s-sci-fi-inspired pulp drama from Forget Me Not Theatre—not necessarily a bad thing, as clearly video designer Dan Haberkorn knows his way around a storyboard. What's bad is that the actors and stark set end up competing against a multidimensional TV world they can’t trump. Playwright Aaron Senser, who has a television background, writes convincing science fiction speak but can't do the same for several crucial hospital scenes involving the title character and his wife—moments that in any case strain too hard to connect the play's dots. Despite these flaws, improv-trained Chicago newbie Brendan J. Mulhern gives a startlingly honest, emotionally charged performance as Supernova Jones. Watch him, tune out the TV. —Chloe Riley
