The In-Laws

Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks stumble through this remake of the 1979 Peter Falk-Alan Arkin comedy looking vaguely dazed to find themselves in such a bad movie. Brooks is a neurotic podiatrist whose daughter is getting married. Her future father-in-law (Douglas) is a rogue CIA agent involved in shady international dealings. Nerd dad meets spy dad, everyone assumes nerd dad is a spy too, and in a better movie hilarity would ensue. Alas, the normally talented director Andrew Fleming (Dick) can't find the light farcical tone that the material requires; instead we get bloated, awkwardly executed big-budget set pieces (Douglas and Brooks parachuting off the Hancock Tower, shenanigans on a Learjet) and truly embarrassing supporting performances—David Suchet fares especially badly as a flirtatious bisexual arms dealer. 95 min.
