The Informer The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through April 18 2010

From playwright Charles Pike and director Scott Vehill comes this stage adaptation of John Ford's 1935 film about Gypo Nolan, a poor Irishman full of bluster, blarney, and booze, who betrays his best friend to the British. In the movie--which was based, in turn, on a novel by Liam O'Flaherty--this leads to a lot of overblown religious imagery and melodrama. Pike and Vehill dispense with most of that, adding new dialogue and rewriting the story as a study of an antihero in extremis. I'm not convinced the material merits a reappraisal, but Turk Muller--who looks something like Ford's star, Victor McLaglen--gives Gypo an air of moody menace that's absorbing throughout. --Zac Thompson
